Monday, Feb. 4

á           Federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York issued a subpoena to President Donald TrumpÕs inaugural committee for an array of documents, including all information related to inaugural donors, vendors, contractors, bank accounts of the inaugural committee and any information related to foreign contributors to the committee.

á           Trump announced that he will nominate David Bernhardt, Acting Interior Secretary, as Secretary of the Interior.

Tuesday, Feb. 5

á           BuzzFeed News published a cache of internal Trump Organization documents that detail the secret negotiations during the 2016 campaign between that organization and Russia to build a Trump Tower in Moscow, including details about using TrumpÕs praise of Putin to help secure PutinÕs support for the deal and details about trying to persuade Putin to openly declare his support for TrumpÕs candidacy.

á           The U.S. and South Korea reached an agreement in principle over the costs of their military alliance, ending a months-long dispute that had loomed over TrumpÕs planned second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

á           The U.S. Department of TransportationÕs Federal Highway Administration announced more than $705.7 million in Emergency Relief funds to help 34 states, including California, as well as American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, make repairs to roads and bridges damaged by storms, floods, and other unexpected events.

á           Trump delivered his second State of the Union address, a week after it had originally been scheduled, due to the government shutdown.

Wednesday, Feb. 6

á           The Defense Department announced that the Pentagon is moving 250 active duty troops to the border town of Eagle Pass, Texas, in advance of the arrival of a new caravan of migrants.

á           In a letter to Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman Julie Kirchner, House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings said heÕs received Òtroubling reportsÓ that Òraise significant questionsÓ about whether Kirchner has Òsufficient commitmentÓ to the agencyÕs mission, and requested several documents and a briefing on her officeÕs backlog.

á           Rep. Adam Schiff announced that testimony from TrumpÕs former attorney, Michael Cohen, before the House Intelligence Committee this week has been delayed to Feb. 28.

á           The House Intelligence Committee voted to send dozens of witness interview transcripts from its Russia investigation to special counsel Robert Mueller, who could use them to prosecute potential instances of perjury.

Thursday, Feb. 7

á           The top Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee sent a letter to Chair Richie Neal saying they are Òdeeply concernedÓ that Democrats are seeking TrumpÕs tax returns, saying, ÒThis is about protecting the private tax returns of every American.Ó

á           Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker agreed to testify before the House Judiciary Committee after originally saying he would not show up as planned on Friday unless Chair Jerry Nadler dropped his threat to issue a subpoena to compel his testimony.

á           House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the Democratic roster for her special select panel on climate change. The panel will include Rep. Jared Huffman of CaliforniaÕs 2nd Congressional District and two other Californians, Reps. Julia Brownley and Mike Lewis.

á           Chief Justice John Roberts joined the courtÕs four liberal justices in granting a stay of  a Louisiana law requiring doctors at abortion clinics have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. The Supreme Court in 2016 found a similar Texas law to be unconstitutional.

á           John Dingell Jr., the longest-serving member of Congress in U.S. history, died at the age of 92 of complications from prostate cancer.

Friday, Feb. 8

á           House Veterans Affairs Committee Chair Mark Takano opened an investigation into the outsized role of three members of TrumpÕs Mar-a-Lago in a digital health record contract and other Veterans Administration business, requesting extensive documents including all records of communication between the Mar-a-Lago members and their companies with current or former senior VA officials.

á           USA Today reported that since he took office, Trump has appointed at least eight people who identified themselves as current or former members of his Mar-a-Lago club to senior posts in his administration.

á           The EPA released data that showed that under Trump, the agency inspected fewer industrial facilities in 2018 than at any time over the past decade, about half the number it inspected in 2010.

á           The Washington Post reported that federal prosecutors are reviewing accusations made by Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos to determine if the National EnquirerÕs parent company may have violated the terms of a non-prosecution agreement struck over a hush money payment meant to help Donald TrumpÕs chances in the 2016 election. Bezos had accused the Enquirer of extortionate tactics.
