á           President Donald Trump offered to ÒhelpÓ with British Prime Minister Boris JohnsonÕs treatment after Johnson tested positive for COVID-19 and was hospitalized.

á           The federal government reached a deal with manufacturing giant 3M to produce about 166 million masks over the next three months. The White House blamed the company for worsening health worker response to the pandemic.

á           Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly traveled to Guam and gave a profanity-laced speech to the 5,000-member crew of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, insulting the shipÕs commander, Capt. Brett Crozier, whom Modly removed last week after Crozier wrote a letter that leaked to the press expressing concerns about how the Navy was handling a coronavirus outbreak aboard the aircraft carrier.

á           Trump removed Glenn Fine from his post as leader of a panel of federal watchdogs monitoring the implementation of the $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus bill, a move Politico cites as the presidentÕs Òlatest incursion into the community of independent federal watchdogs.Ó

á           Wisconsin's supreme court blocked Gov. Tony EversÕ executive order to postpone the following dayÕs in-person voting until June 9. The Supreme Court itself met remotely to make this decision. A dissent from federal Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg warned this ruling Òwill result in massive disenfranchisement.Ó

Tuesday, April 7

á           Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly resigned Tuesday after drawing condemnation for insulting Capt. Brett Crozier, the commanding officer of an aircraft carrier who was fired for writing a letter of concern about the serviceÕs handling of a coronavirus outbreak aboard his vessel.

á           Stephanie Grisham left her post as White House press secretary, which she held since last summer, without ever once actually briefing the press.

á           An appeals court panel declined to block the Trump administrationÕs plan to restart federal executions for the first time since 2003.

á           Trump announced, then reversed within minutes, plans to freeze United States funding for the World Health Organization.

Wednesday, April 8

á           Bernie Sanders dropped out of the 2020 Democratic primary race. ÒI cannot in good conscience continue to mount a campaign that cannot win and which would interfere with the important work required of all of us in this difficult hour,Ó he said in a live-streamed speech.

á           With Sanders out of the race, Vice President Biden became the presumptive Democratic Party nominee.

á           Trump directed Republicans to fight against the expansion of mail-in voting amid the coronavirus pandemic, citing debunked claims of its potential for voter fraud and because it, Òfor whatever reason,Ó he said on Twitter, ÒdoesnÕt work out well for Republicans.Ó

Thursday, April 9

á           Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said that the economy is in an emergency and is deteriorating Òwith alarming speed.Ó His remarks came the same day the Labor Department said last week 6.6 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits. More than 17 million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits in the past four weeks.

á           Senate Democrats blocked a White House proposal for $250 billion in aid to small businesses and $250 billion for health care providers and states after receiving only 48 hours notice and little background data. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the proposal a Òstunt.Ó

á           Tara Reade, former aide to Biden, said she filed a police report accusing Biden of sexual assault. Reade previously joined seven other women in publicly accusing the presidential hopeful of inappropriate touching.

Friday, April 10

á           Coronavirus-related deaths in the U.S. surpassed Spain with almost 18,000 fatalities reported. The total caseload neared 500,000.

á           Richard K. Delmar, deputy inspector general of the Department of the Treasury, wrote in a letter to House Democrats that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin followed the guidance of the Department of JusticeÕs Office of Legal Counsel in refusing to give TrumpÕs tax returns to Congress.

Saturday, April 11

á           Biden won the Alaska Democratic primary, pulling 11 delegates to SandersÕ four.

á           The U.S. reached 20,229 coronavirus-related deaths, surpassing Italy. The death toll roughly doubled from the week prior.

Sunday, April 12

á           Dr. Anthony Fauci, the U.S. top infectious disease expert, said parts of the country could have a Òrolling reentryÓ into the economy as early as May.
